Downlights sold in New Zealand require a classification relating to AS/NZS60598.2.2 Amendment A. There are 5 classifications to understand when selecting a light and the purpose they are being used for needs to be considered. Amendment A relates to the temperature a light fitting can reach when installed. Taken into consideration is if the insulation is installed over it or not, how resistant the insulation is to heat, and how close it can be to building materials (e.g. timber). Definitions are below to assist you.
IC-F: Abutted & Covered, Building insulation that can safely be continuously exposed to 90C allowed to ABUT and COVER the luminaire. Resistant to ingress of external matter. Residential or Commercial Installation.
IC: Abutted & Covered. Building insulation that can safely be continuously exposed to 90C allowed to ABUT and COVER luminaire. Residential or Commercial Installation.
CA80: Building insulation that can safely be continuously exposed to 90C allowed to ABUT the luminaire (NOT COVER). Residential or Commercial Installation.
CA-135: Building insulation that can safely be continuously exposed to temperatures up to 150C allowed to ABUT the luminaire. Commercial Installation.
NON IC: Luminaries not suitable for covering or abutting with building insulation. Commercial Installation only
