IP Rating (Ingress protection) and Bathroom Zoning are closely linked, at HUGO lighting we ensure our fittings are adequately tested to ensure our fitting pass and exceed expectations.
Ingress Protection (IP) is a measure to determine the ability to cope with solids and liquids entering the fitting, within lighting this generally is related to liquids. The code consisted of 2 letters and 2 numbers, IP 65. IP = Ingress Protection, 6 = Solids i.e., Dust etc, 5 = Liquids
First Digit : 0 = No Protection, 1 = >50mm in diameter (i.e., body etc.), 2 = >12.5mm in diameter (fingers or small objects), 3 = >2.5mm in diameter (tools, thick wire etc.), 4 = >1mm in diameter (most wires and screws), 5 = Dust Protection, 6 = Dust tight (no ingress)
Second Digit: : 0 = No Protection, 1 = Dripping water (vertically falling), 2 = Dripping water when tilted to 15deg, 3 = Spraying water (sprayed and angle of <60 deg from the vertical), 4 = Splashing Water (water splashing from any direction), 5 = Water Jets (6.3mm nozzle projecting water), 6 = Powerful water Jets (12.5mm nozzle projecting water), 7 = Immersion up to 1m, 8 = Immersion beyond 1m (depth will be listed on the product)
Bathroom Zoning is linked to Ingress Protection (IP). The purpose is to ensure fittings have the correct protection against water. This is split into zones
Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower. These must be SELV (Low voltage i.e. 12V Max). Minimum IP rating IPx7 (IP67)
Zone 1: Above the bath or shower to a height of 2.85m. Minimum rating of IPx5 (IP65), there is a chance jets of water may hit the fitting.
Zone 2: Area stretching 0.6m outside the bath or shower
Outside Zones: No IP rating required
